GEORGE COX

George Cox invented the brothel creeper in 1949 at their Castle Works factory in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire. The Hamilton — named after founder's son George Hamilton Cox — was the world's first commercially manufactured creeper, and it became the defining shoe of the Teddy Boys, Britain's first mass youth cult.

Malcolm McLaren bought his first pair of George Cox creepers from the pop-art boutique Mr Freedom in 1970. When he and Vivienne Westwood opened SEX on the King's Road, they ordered several styles directly from the George Cox factory. The creeper went on to define the look of punk, new wave, rockabilly, and goth — and has been worn by everyone from David Bowie and The Clash to Comme des Garçons on the Paris runway.

BritBoot is one of a tiny number of George Cox retailers in the UK, and the only place where you can buy the full range of premium English-made creepers from the Wellingborough factory. Every pair is still bench-made by a fifth-generation family business. Our selection includes the classic D-Ring creeper, the pointed toe, the monkey boot, suede and leather options, and thick and thin sole variants.
